Hank Aaron Makes The Most of Spring Training Opportunity

When Braves left fielder Bobby Thomson broke his ankle during a 1954 in a spring training game, opening a spot in outfield for Aaron. March 14 Aaron makes his first spring training start for the Braves and hits a home run.

Kansas City Royals took time out of their 1971 Spring Training routine to play an exhibition game against The Tokyo Giants, led by Honorary 500 HRC member Sadaharu Oh who hit 868 homeruns during his career in Japan. Oh hit two home runs in the game, as the Tokyo Giants beat the Royals 7–4 before 3,463 fans.

Barry Bonds hit a two-run shot to right-center in the fourth inning off Oakland Athletics Mark Mulder to set a new San Francisco Giants spring training record with 10 home runs, breaking his own team record of nine set in 2000.

At Phoenix, Sammy Sosa, who at the time needed just one regular-season home run to reach 500, wrapped up his spring by going 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBIs.  

At West Sacramento, Calif., Rafael Palmeiro homered and drove in two runs for Texas.
