How does a player transform himself from public pariah to hometown hero within a period of six months?

Just ask Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez, who faced intense interrogation and embarrassment last spring when he admitted to using steroids several years ago as a member of the Texas Rangers.
Fast-forward to October and Rodriguez's transgressions are a distant memory as he sheds the label as a postseason bust. Rodriguez was a major factor in the American League Divisional series against the Minnesota Twins, blasting a pair of meaningful home runs.
He continued to swing the bat well in the first game of the ALCS against the Angels.
Rodriguez, Manny Ramirez, Jim Thome...which 500 Home Run Club member will have the greatest impact as the playoffs morph into the World Series?
A-Rod, who also underwent major hip surgery early in the season, looks like a new man so far in the postseason. He looks like a hero action figure to Yankees fans.
